Make a difference in the lives of local communities by volunteering in Africa. This program must be combined with an English learning program.

Mother & Child Program

At ELS Cape Town you can get involved with organisations that are motivated by the principle of empowerment and that provide shelter, care and empowerment to destitute, abused and disadvantaged mothers and their children. This is a fantastic opportunity to study English in Cape Town, South Africa while you enable disadvantaged and distressed women and their children to find relief and support and to find a chance to become independent, confident and self-sufficient.

School Library

ELS Cape Town offers you the chance to teach English in South Africa! For many children attending schools in Cape Town, English is only their second language. There are language barriers that need to be overcome in the classes as some children speak Xhosa or others speak Afrikaans, but all of them are mainly taught in English. The school library project is an attempt to lower the percentage of illiteracy, which remains a prevalent problem in primary schools in disadvantaged communities.Use your experience as an English as a second language student to help South African children learn and improve their English through reading fun and exciting children’s books.

Township Teaching

ELS Cape Town can also assist you to find a Volunteer Project that gives you the opportunity to get immersed in the lives of local township youths. You will be assisting with career guidance, provide counselling when needed, arrange school sports matches, travel to sports and cultural events, all while helping youths improve their English. Many of the children have difficulty with discipline and will test your patience but these community volunteer projects are a great way to bond with them. There will be many opportunities to be positive role models and forge life-long friendships.
